Auckland Zoo is inviting people of all ages to share what connecting with nature means to them by contributing to its In Your Nature Community Art Trail, opening at the Zoo on Thursday, December 18.
Submissions are open until Friday, November 21, and can include art, photography or poetry. Selected works will be reproduced in large-format displays along the Zoo’s summer trail, which will run until Sunday, February 8, 2026.
Auckland Zoo visitor experiences and engagement manager Zoe Firth says the trail is about celebrating how people experience and express their connection with the natural world.
“It’s in our nature to connect with nature, and it’s really good for us,” Zoe says. “Research shows that spending time with wildlife and in green spaces lowers stress, boosts our mood and deepens our sense of belonging and wellbeing.
“Each of us connects with nature in our own way. The Zoo is Te Pā Hono — a place of connection for whānau and friends to come together and connect with te taiao, the natural world that we are all part of. It’s the perfect environment to share creative expressions from our communities that reflect those unique relationships with nature.”
Following the completion of the Zoo’s Dinosaur Discovery Track winter activation, the space is now being prepared for the new summer art trail.
“We’re looking forward to selecting a diversity of artworks to showcase in what will be a relaxing and inspiring space,” Zoe says. “Visitors can sit and enjoy kai and time together while taking part in creative activities on offer.”
The Zoo welcomes submissions from artists of all ages and abilities, with entries ranging from finger painting to fine art. Participants are asked to submit high-quality photographs of their artwork rather than originals.
Further information, including entry forms and submission details, is available on the Auckland Zoo website.
