South Islanders will soon be able to skip the Auckland stopover, with Air New Zealand launching new non-stop flights between Christchurch and Rarotonga.
The seasonal service begins in May 2026 and will operate three times a week through to October, offering travellers a direct winter escape to the Cook Islands.
Christchurch Airport chief executive Justin Watson says the new route is a major boost for South Island connectivity.
“Until now, South Islanders have needed to connect through Auckland to reach Rarotonga. This direct route means more time relaxing on the beach and less time in transit,” Justin says.
“It’s another great step in growing international options for our airport, and it’s good news for families and active holidaymakers who want to mix relaxation with adventure.”
Rarotonga’s warm climate, turquoise lagoons and welcoming culture make it one of the South Pacific’s most popular destinations. With a flight time of around four and a half hours, the new service means travellers can enjoy a sunset meal the same evening they leave Christchurch.
The route will add about 18,000 seats between Christchurch and the Cook Islands across the season, creating new opportunities for tourism and Pacific connections.
