Christchurch Airport’s head of tourism and trade development Scott Callaway has been recognised with the Sir Jack Newman Outstanding Industry Leader Award at the 2025 New Zealand Tourism Awards in Wellington.
The award celebrates individuals who have demonstrated long-term leadership, innovation, and influence in New Zealand’s tourism industry — qualities that define Scott’s 50-year career shaping Aotearoa’s visitor economy.
Ngāi Tahu gifted the whakatauākī “He manawa tītī, he manawa ora, he manawa hūmārie” to accompany his nomination, acknowledging Scott as “a man that possesses a resilient, vibrant and humble heart”.
From his beginnings as a Mt Hutt ski instructor in the 1970s to senior roles with the Mount Cook Group, Air New Zealand, and AJ Hackett Bungy, Scott has spent five decades championing South Island tourism and helping build New Zealand’s global reputation as a leading visitor destination.
His leadership has played a pivotal role in positioning Christchurch as the gateway to Te Waipounamu (the South Island) and in strengthening international connections that continue to benefit both the region and the wider industry.
Christchurch Airport chief executive Justin Watson says Scott’s contribution has been transformative.
“Scott’s vision, collaboration and respect for people and place have driven sustainable growth across the South Island,” Justin says. “He has united communities, operators, and international partners to deliver long-term success for our region and country.”
Scott has led initiatives such as Kia Ora South and South, which brought together tourism operators, Ngāi Tahu, and regional agencies to showcase the South Island to the world. His approach to partnership and cultural authenticity has set a benchmark for tourism development in Aotearoa.
Former Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel says Scott’s career exemplifies the values behind the lifetime achievement award.
“I looked at the attributes that exemplify a lifetime of achievement worthy of this award: integrity, innovation, entrepreneurship, inclusiveness, passion, empowerment, accountability, inspiration, great communication, and empathy,” Lianne says. “Every one of those attributes is part of who Scott Callaway is.”
Accepting the award, Scott said the recognition belongs to the many people who have shared the journey.
“This industry has given me lifelong friendships, challenges, and an incredible sense of purpose,” he says. “I’ve simply been part of a much bigger team — people who care deeply about New Zealand, our visitors, and the places we call home.
“It’s been a privilege to help tell the story of our region and to work alongside so many passionate people dedicated to keeping Aotearoa special.”
Justin says the award is a fitting tribute to a career defined by humility and service.
“Scott’s humility, generosity and relentless optimism make him one of the greats,” he says. “We’re incredibly proud to see his lifetime of work recognised at a national level — and to have him as part of our team.”
