The world-famous Cardrona Hotel will remain in New Zealand hands following its sale to a local ownership group with strong links to Central Otago.
The 162-year-old heritage-listed hotel and restaurant has been purchased for an undisclosed sum, with new owners taking over on Monday, November 3.
The new owners, who wish to remain low key, will operate the property under the leadership of Warren Barclay, a Wānaka resident and owner of Experience Group, which manages hospitality for major sporting and entertainment events across New Zealand.
Warren will step away from the day-to-day operations of Experience Group to take on the role of Cardrona Hotel publican.
Warren says the new ownership group shares a deep respect for the hotel’s history and plans to preserve its character while enhancing guest experiences.
“We’re incredibly proud to take on the stewardship of such a special part of New Zealand’s story,” he says. “The Cardrona Hotel holds a unique place in the hearts of so many, and we’re committed to preserving its heritage while exploring thoughtful ways to enhance its boutique accommodation, dining, event offerings and overall guest experience.”
He says the purchase also reflects ongoing confidence in the Southern Lakes region as a premier tourism and lifestyle destination.
“The hotel’s strong trading performance, year-round visitor appeal and iconic status made it a highly sought-after opportunity in the hospitality market.”
Outgoing owner Cade Thornton, who operated the property for the past 13 years, thanked the local community and guests for their support.
“It’s been an honour to be part of the Cardrona Hotel’s legacy,” says Cade. “We’re delighted to see it passed on to passionate new custodians who share a love for the region and its heritage.”
Cade will remain involved for a short transition period before taking time off with his family, who plan an extended trip to Australia next year.
The hotel will continue operating as usual, with no immediate changes to staffing or services.
