Airways New Zealand has announced the appointment of Darin Cusack as chair of the Airways Board and Danny Tuato’o as deputy chair, effective Friday, October 31, 2025.
Darin, currently the deputy chair, brings extensive experience in aviation, transport and tourism, having held senior executive roles across airports, air navigation, aviation security and airline organisations throughout New Zealand and the Pacific. He joined the Airways Board in April 2018 and will play a key role in guiding the organisation as it continues to deliver safe, efficient and sustainable air traffic management services for New Zealand.
Danny joined the Airways Board in July 2023 and brings strong legal, leadership and governance expertise to his new role as deputy chair.
Darin says he looks forward to continuing Airways’ focus on safety and innovation.
“I look forward to ensuring Airways continues to perform strongly by delivering safe, efficient and resilient air traffic services across our vast 30 million square kilometres of controlled airspace, while understanding and adapting to the diverse needs of those who use New Zealand’s airspace.”
Airways chief executive James Young says the appointments come at a pivotal time for the organisation.
“We congratulate both Darin and Danny on their respective appointments. The Board and Airways have benefited greatly from Darin’s broad aviation expertise and understanding of Airways, combined with Danny’s strong legal, governance and leadership experience,” says James.
“These skills, along with the continuity of having existing Board members step into these positions, will be invaluable as we continue delivering on our strategic priorities and building the future of New Zealand’s aviation system.”
The Board and executive also acknowledged outgoing chair Denise Church QSO for her seven years of leadership, including through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Denise’s leadership provided strength, clarity and stability at a time of unprecedented challenge,” says James. “Her guidance and focus on our people and strategy have strengthened Airways’ foundations and positioned the organisation well for the future.”
Denise says it has been a privilege to serve as chair.
“I am proud of the progress we have made together and confident that Airways is well placed to continue delivering on its strategy and meeting the challenges ahead.”
Board member Mark Hutchinson will step down on Thursday, October 30, at the conclusion of his term. The Board and executive thanked him for his strong contributions, particularly around organisational culture and leadership.
