Tourism New Zealand is proud to feature in The Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s first-ever global digital series, Travel Redefined: Tourism for People and Planet.
As the world embarks on a new era of travel, this new digital film series supports the urgent need – and growing momentum – for sustainability practices in tourism worldwide. Travel Redefined takes an in-depth look into how sustainable and regenerative tourism supports people, planet, and prosperity by sharing real stories and expert insights from inspiring people and organisations around the world.
Aotearoa New Zealand was invited to participate in the series because of its reputation in sustainable tourism and business events. The New Zealand films explore tiakitanga, the indigenous Māori concept of caring for people and place for future generations, and how that is embodied in the operations and experiences of New Zealand’s tourism industry.
The series features examples from Kohutapu Lodge & Tribal Tours and Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. Both are Qualmark Gold-accredited operators. Qualmark’s Sustainable Tourism Business criteria has GSTC-Recognised Status, meaning Qualmark members meet global standards of sustainability across key pillars including environment, people & culture, and safety & wellness.
“We’re really proud of the sustainable tourism offerings we have here in Aotearoa New Zealand,” says Tourism New Zealand general manager Pou Ārahi Māori Karl Burrows.
“I really love what we do because I think indigenous ideas and philosophies have a lot to contribute to the world, particularly when it comes to sustainability.”
This landmark digital series is a global call to action to build awareness of tourism’s potential to create positive social, cultural, environmental, and economic change – from policymakers, industry leaders, travellers, and changemakers.
“Travel Redefined is a powerful reminder that every journey holds the potential to leave a positive legacy,” says GSTC CEO Randy Durband.
“Many of the featured stories come from GSTC Members who are already putting these values into practice. They serve as real-world examples of what’s possible when sustainability is placed at the heart of tourism.”
The series was produced in partnership with Content With Purpose, the strategic content creator that empowers sustainable development. All of the films in the series showcase sustainable best practice and examine the role of tourism in promoting biodiversity conservation, carbon reductions, green mobility, responsible waste practices, equitable economic development, cultural preservation, and accessible experiences.
“We have embedded sustainability into every step, reflecting our environmental commitments, from using local crews to telling real-life stories that empower communities and protect the planet – proving that a flourishing, sustainable industry isn’t a distant vision,” says Content With Purpose founder and managing director Max Smith.
“It’s happening right now, and we all have a role to play in this transformation.”
