Travellers who visited Nelson Tasman on their most recent domestic trip reported the highest satisfaction levels in the country, according to Angus & Associates’ latest Domestic Visitor Satisfaction Survey (for the year ending March 2025). With an impressive overall satisfaction score of 8.9 out of 10, Nelson Tasman surpassed other popular destinations around the country.
“It’s a reflection of the incredible work our operators do every day to create unforgettable experiences for visitors,” says Nelson Regional Development Agency visitor destination manager Craig Boodee.
“Our region has faced some tough weather events recently, Nelson Tasman remains beautiful, vibrant, and ready to welcome you.”
Visitors can enjoy everything that makes Nelson Tasman special this spring: from cruising or hiking in Abel Tasman National Park and cycling the Great Taste Trail, to discovering gold-rated mountain bike tracks like the Coppermine Trail and Heaphy Track, there’s no shortage of adventure. Add in the vibrant Saturday Market, more than 300 local artists and galleries, and family-friendly free attractions, and it’s easy to see why visitors are raving.
And the magic of Golden Bay – worth staying the extra couple of days for.
“Our easily accessible natural environment, variety of accommodation types, and open, friendly faces in the visitor industry — supported by locals who value visitors and welcome them here — all make the region special,” says Paddy Gillooly from Farewell Spit Tours.
“Our clients love the uncrowded, wild feel of this part of the region and find it helps them recharge. National recognition of this type is a great encouragement for the team as we prepare for next season.”
Supporting this success, NRDA – with support from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment – has trained more than 150 local frontline tourism, hospitality and retail staff over the past year. These workshops have equipped staff with expert customer service techniques, te reo Māori greetings and place names, and the confidence to promote neighbouring experiences and businesses.
“Like many operators in Nelson Tasman we go to great lengths to listen to our guests, that’s what sets our region apart, I think,” says Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park CE David Pattinson.
“Recent examples include opening our very first dog friendly units which are already getting bookings, and a comprehensive upgrade of our two accessible units with lovely decks and soon to be completed landscaping and an outdoor space which is also accessible friendly.”
This September, NRDA is also launching a new Visitor Information Ambassador volunteer programme, with passionate locals ready to share insider tips to explore, eat and enjoy – further enhancing the welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
“Don’t wait – come and see why Kiwis love it here,” says Craig.
“Enjoy our famous sunshine, warm hospitality, and book a trip now for this spring – we’re open!”
