Tourism Waitaki is pleased to announce the appointment of Heather Matthews as the new general manager – regional tourism operation, bringing with her nearly two decades of diverse leadership experience across the global tourism industry.
Heather has held senior roles across a variety of key tourism sectors, making her uniquely positioned to lead Waitaki’s regional tourism strategy with both a global outlook and local insight. Most recently, she served as head of marketing and trade at Great Journeys New Zealand (KiwiRail), and prior to that, Hawke’s Bay Tourism, Fullers360, and Expedia.
Heather is known for her vibrant leadership style, strategic thinking, and ability to build high-performing, values-led teams. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Auckland, Certificates in sustainable tourism and revenue management, and is currently studying towards a Master of Business in Tourism at the University of Otago.
“Heather brings a powerful mix of energy, professionalism, and strategic expertise to the role,” says Tourism Waitaki chair Mike McElhinney.
“Her deep industry knowledge and stakeholder relationships will be invaluable as we strengthen the visitor economy while preserving the unique natural and cultural heritage of our region.”
Heather is equally enthusiastic about the opportunity. “I’m thrilled to join the team at Tourism Waitaki and contribute to the future of one of New Zealand’s emerging regions.
