In recent data from Stats New Zealand, overseas visitor arrivals in August 2024 saw an increase in with a total of 214,300 visitors—up by 7500 from August 2023.
The biggest increases were from Australia, with 13,800 more visitors, and China, up by 3200. However, arrivals from the United States saw a decline of 6500 compared to the previous year.
Despite the growth, overall arrivals still only reached 85 per cent of the 251,100 visitors recorded in August 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted international travel. This data highlights a steady recovery, though the tourism sector has yet to return to its pre-pandemic strength.
