Recent New Zealand’s annual migration data for August 2024 reveals a sharp decline in net migration, with a significant drop in migrant arrivals and record-high departures. Provisional estimates show 188,100 migrant arrivals in the August 2024 year, down 17 per cent compared to the previous year. In contrast, migrant departures surged by 37 per cent to reach 134,300, the highest on record for any annual period.
The net migration gain for the year stood at 53,800, a significant drop from the 127,700 net gain recorded in August 2023. The peak for annual migrant arrivals was provisionally reached in October 2023, with 236,200 arrivals, while annual net migration hit its high at 136,400 in the same period.
The current trends reflect a shift in migration patterns, with more people leaving the country than in previous years.
