Aotearoa New Zealand is well known for our stunning scenery and epic tourism experiences, but international manuhiri (visitors) are also very keen to sample our culinary delights.
Tourism New Zealand’s consumer research shows trying local cuisine is the number one activity for more than 85 per cent of potential visitors in all our key markets.
“Visitors to Aotearoa New Zealand’s are spoilt for choice when it comes to our food and beverages. Our fresh kaimoana (seafood), world-class wine, craft beer and produce are second-to-none. Visitors can eat and drink their way around Aotearoa New Zealand with hundreds of cafes, restaurants, wineries and breweries to choose from,” says Tourism New Zealand chief executive René de Monchy.
“Our delicious food and beverage options can be enjoyed year-round. In fact, the wine harvest and Bluff oyster season both fall in autumn, giving international foodies lots to indulge in during their off-peak visit.”
Trying local cuisine is of particular interest to potential visitors from the USA (83 per cent), UK (89 per cent) and Germany (87 per cent). Seventy four per cent of potential visitors from Australia also agree that New Zealand is a place that offers quality food and wine experiences.
“Tourism and international visitor spending will be crucial in reaching the government’s goal to double exports over the next decade. Manuhiri visiting our eateries and bars inject much-needed cash into local communities across the country. In 2023, international visitors contributed $9.9 billion to New Zealand.”
Tourism New Zealand’s new four-year strategy aims to grow international tourism from an $8.2 billion sector in 2023 to a $13.2 billion sector by 2028 with 70 per cent ($3.5 billion) of growth from off-peak visits.
“Aotearoa New Zealand’s food and beverages are celebrated worldwide, and Tourism New Zealand will continue to highlight our delicious offerings to show potential visitors what they can look forward to as part of their kiwi experience,” René says.
