Tourism witnessed a significant surge in international travel in April 2024, with the total number of arrivals reaching 271,400, a 19% increase compared to April 2023. Departures also saw a significant rise, totalling 261,200, up 17% from the previous year.
Top Source Countries
Australia remains the leading source of visitors, contributing 110,000 arrivals, followed by the United States with 34,100, and China at 22,700. These figures highlight a robust recovery in international tourism, reflecting increased global mobility and confidence in travel.
Purpose of Travel
Holidaymaking topped the list of travel purposes, with 144,000 people arriving for leisure, while 61,200 visitors came to visit friends and relatives. Business travel also showed a resurgence, with 39,600 arrivals, indicating a strong recovery in the corporate travel sector.
Regional Distribution
Auckland remained the primary gateway, welcoming 181,300 international visitors. Christchurch and Wellington followed with 48,700 and 27,400 arrivals, respectively. This distribution underscores Auckland’s pivotal role in New Zealand’s tourism infrastructure.
