At the recent TRENZ conference May 10, 2024, Janet Purdey, general manager for Ngā Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trails, presented compelling data on the multifaceted benefits of cycling. Speaking on Friday, May 10, she highlighted not only the physical and mental health advantages but also the economic impact of cycling on the nation.
According to recent research, cycling holidays are gaining traction, especially among international visitors who now make up 18% of trail users—a significant rise from the pre-COVID figures in 2019. This growing interest highlights the broader appeal and accessibility of New Zealand’s scenic rides.
Janet also shared some uplifting statistics from users of the Great Rides, noting significant improvements in well-being and physical fitness:
56% of cyclists reported enhanced mental health.
47% experienced improved physical fitness.
44% felt stronger bonds with their companions.
The health benefits generated by cycling users are estimated to be around $11 million to the economy.
In addition, the trails are especially beneficial for individuals with disabilities, fostering skills development, self-discovery, improved relationships, and enhanced cycling confidence.
In her presentation, Janet emphasised on the holistic benefits of engaging with the trails. “It really kind of covers all the elements that are recognised as having a positive impact on well-being. So when people do a great ride, they’re physically active, they connect with nature, they disconnect from their everyday lives. There’s been quality time with family and friends. And that’s coupled with positive risks taken. So they’re seeing and experiencing thing in places and eating local food,” she says.
“You know all of that contributes to an enhanced sense of well-being. So we just really can’t underestimate in today’s world, the historical power of nature. And a significant percent of our trail users say their sense of well-being and mental health has improved. 47% of users say their physical fitness has improved.” says Janet.
Personal testimonies shared by Janet also highlighted the transformative potential of cycling. One user mentioned, “I Went out of my comfort zone, joined the e-bike group, literally changed my life.” Another reflected on using cycling as a therapeutic activity, “Used cycling as a way to combat the grief I feel since my son’s death.” And another user shared a recovery story: “It’s been an absolute turning point for me in the year-long battle with long COVID. Having the bags transported and accommodation sorted really helped me to manage my energy levels, and doing gentle cycling amidst beautiful scenery and fresh air has helped me to regain some of my former health.”
