In the heart of New Zealand’s geothermal paradise, Rotorua, the Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa is steeped in wellness and cultural heritage.
Since its opening June 2023, Wai- Ariki has offered a distinctive blend of luxury, tradition, and sustainable wellness, attracting visitors from around the globe.
The Rise of Wellness Tourism
Wellness tourism, centered on health, sustainability, and genuine cultural interactions, has been on the rise globally. Locations like Wai-Ariki are at the forefront, offering experiences that cater to the sophisticated demands of modern travelers seeking not just relaxation but rejuvenation and a connection to the ancient wisdom of the lands they visit.
As Wai -Ariki prepares to celebrate its first anniversary, it stands as a proud symbol of this shift, promising continued growth and innovation in the world of wellness tourism.
A Cultural and Healing Haven
Wai -Ariki is not just a spa but a cultural stronghold, curated by the local iwi, Ngāti Whakaue. The name itself, meaning ‘Chiefly Waters,’ is a nod to the majestic and sacred nature of the waters that flow through it. The spa offers pathways like Wai Whakaora, designed for restoration, and Āhuru Mōwai, an exclusive sanctuary, both deeply ingrained with Māori values.
Here, visitors experience a convergence of Ngāti Whakaue culture, healing traditions, and warm hospitality beside the mesmerizing Lake Rotorua.
Debbie Robertson, general manager at Wai- Ariki, recently shared her insights into the vision behind Wai- Ariki. “It’s been a long-term vision for our hapū to share our healing practices globally. What began as a dream 25 years ago, before Rotorua became a tourism hub, has now materialized into this unique luxury wellness space.” she says.
What Makes Wai-Ariki Special
Debbie says what sets Wai- Ariki apart is the deep connection guests can form—not just with the place, but with its people. “Our approach to hospitality has been perfected over centuries. Today, our guests are more health-conscious and considerate of their environmental footprint. They value meaningful engagements, something that we, as Māori, excel in by sharing our culture and our homes.” she says.
Wai-Ariki is a nod to sustainable practices as well. The spa uses geothermal waters that have been beneath the earth for centuries, which are then re-injected back into the ground after use, ensuring nothing is wasted. This circular approach not only preserves the environment but also enriches the guest experience with the knowledge that they are part of something truly enduring.
The Future of Wai-Ariki
The future looks promising with plans to expand the wellness experience into a full-scale hotel adjacent to the spa. “In maybe five years, we hope to open a hotel that embodies the same principles as Wai-Ariki.” says Debbie.
This expansion will surely set to further enhance Rotorua’s position as a leader in luxury and wellness tourism.
