In a development for adventure tourism, Pure Tūroa has recently stepped into the spotlight as the new owner and operators of the Tūroa Ski Field at Mt Ruapehu that will also include a 10-year concession granted by the Department of Conservation (DoC), setting the stage for a new chapter in the region’s skiing season.
Pure Tūroa says the concession is a positive and solid foundation that will deliver successful environmental and cultural outcomes long into the future. At the first opportunity, they will be applying to extend its concession.
While there has been challenges navigating the complexities of the Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL) insolvency and governmental deliberations, Pure Tūroa directors Cameron Robertson and Greg Hickman say it has been a journey of perseverance, however, they say they have found it to be a rewarding and positive experience.
Their partnership with iwi and DoC reflects a commitment to environmental care and cultural preservation, laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth in the years to come.
With the mantle of responsibility now firmly in their grasp, Pure Tūroa is set to usher in a new era of adventure tourism in the region with Cameron and Greg proud to have their long-held vision a reality.
“We are absolutely thrilled that we’re finally here, it’s been a long road and we’re really excited about the upcoming season at Tūroa” Cameron says.
In celebration of this milestone, Pure Tūroa announced in a media release, April 18 that they also launched their season sale passes as a discounted price offer that saw season pass sales reaching the million-dollar mark within minutes. The launch price offer, coupled with innovative initiatives like ‘Bring-a-Buddy Wednesdays’, not only attracts seasoned enthusiasts but also opens doors for newcomers to experience the thrill of the slopes.
The directors expressed their gratitude for the unwavering support received from locals and enthusiasts worldwide, as evidenced by the overwhelming response to the launch of season pass sales. In the media release, Cameron says “We are incredibly thankful for the support. We’re relieved to finally be here and it’s surreal to watch the number of visitors to the website tick up on the screen.”
As the winter season approaches, Pure Tūroa promises not just exhilarating skiing experiences but also a vibrant calendar of events and better initiatives. From revitalised base area facilities to expanded ski school offerings, every aspect of the Pure Tūroa experience will receive a fresh infusion of energy and enthusiasm.
In addition, their inclusive approach extends beyond the slopes, with special programs designed to make Pure Tūroa accessible to local schools and community groups.
Looking ahead to a thriving season, Pure Tūroa Ltd looks forward to working with iwi, local business and Crown partners on a new Tūroa ski operation that is financially sustainable delivering the economic certainty our local region needs.
Greg says, “Ruapehu is renowned for adventure tourism, with a great array of trails and activities to be found throughout. The certainty of Tūroa operating rounds out the winter tourism offer, and we hope to implement some summer activities in the future.”
