The Minister for Tourism and Hospitality has endorsed investment into a range of new tourism data to support the growth of the tourism sector.
The data, which will be sourced by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, is the first in a range of initiatives to be funded from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy allocation of $5.08m to improve the tourism data system.
The new data will primarily be domestic-focused and will provide insight into areas such as visitor movement, the short-term rental accommodation market, visitor experience, and community sentiment. The first of the data is expected to be available from later this year.
The investment in this new data follows recommendations from the Tourism Data Leadership Group. More information about the Group’s role in the tourism data system and future desired outcomes can be found in its draft Strategic Business Plan, due to be finalised in April.
“The new data will complement existing tourism data such as the Tourism Satellite Account and the International Visitor Survey and will support, among other things, regions and tourism operators with their business planning and performance reporting,” says MBIE manager tourism, evidence and insights Amapola Generosa.
MBIE is already working towards finding suitable suppliers for the new data. A Request for Information seeking an up-to-date understanding of innovative methodologies and solutions will go live on the Government Electronic Tender System today and will be open until March 22, 2024. The procurement process will begin after that.
More information about the new data will be made available in due course.
