In a celebration of talent and dedication, Restaurant Association chief executive, Marisa Bidois has been named among Aotearoa’s Top 50 Most Influential and Inspiring Women in Food and Drink for 2024.
The recognition is not only a nod to Marisa’s unwavering commitment to the hospitality industry but also highlights her role as a key figure in shaping the future of food and drink in New Zealand.
Her time in the hospitality sector is marked by many significant achievements, amongst them is the successful advocacy for hospitality to be recognised as a standalone portfolio by the government and its new Tourism and Hospitality Minster, Matt Doocey. Marisa says this kind of support highlights the importance of the hospitality industry to the national economy and ensures that it receives the attention and support it deserves in policy discussions.
“It’s such a huge thing for our industry to finally have a minister that has hospitality attached to their title.” she says.
Under her Restaurant Association leadership, Marisa has spearheaded initiatives aimed at elevating the profile of the hospitality industry, advocating for its interests, and creating opportunities for growth and innovation. Her efforts have been key in highlighting the sector’s economic significance and ensuring that it has a voice in crucial times. She says this focus on fostering industry interest and opportunities has been central to her vision of a thriving, dynamic hospitality sector that is recognised for its contribution to New Zealand’s “social and economic fabric.”
Her influence extends beyond policy victories, and she has also been a driving force in promoting resilience and adaptability within the industry, especially in the face of recent challenges. In 2022, in the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, Marisa, alongside chef Al Brown, initiated the “Cooking up a Storm” fundraising campaign. This effort successfully gathered over $370,000 in support of people and hospitality enterprises deeply impacted by the cyclone, and created a spotlight for the hospitality industry.
Her optimism for the future of hospitality is contagious, as she points to the sector’s innovative spirit and its integral role in the community. “Hospitality will always have a place in the market. It is part of our social fabric.” she says.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Marisa finds balance and energy in meditation, walks, and quality time with family and friends. Yet, it’s clear that her passion for her work remains a source of deep fulfilment.
“The work that I do is really rewarding in itself. I really get a lot of joy and satisfaction from helping our businesses. It’s dealing with people and it’s helping people who need help.” she says.
