In a huge milestone for local tourism, Rotorua Canopy Tours has officially become the first and only B-Corp certified business in Rotorua, and the inaugural Ziplining BCorp in the country.
Rotorua Canopy Tours gained the certification December 2023 and places them alongside an elite group of businesses committed to balancing profit and purpose.
Rotorua Canopy Tours general manager Paul Button says “We are thrilled to announce that we have become the 5th NZ tourism business to achieve BCorp certification. “This accomplishment is a source of pride for us, representing recognition beyond our renowned conservation efforts.”
Rotorua Canopy Tours joins the ranks of other NZ tourism businesses like Owen River Lodge, Akaroa Dolphin Watch, Audley Travel, and Intrepid Travel, in achieving this certification. Paul says the BCorp badge is not just an accolade but a holistic measure that propels businesses to excel in various facets, including environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.
“The voluntary nature of the process, rather than being imposed by an industry body, underscores our commitment to innovation and continuous business growth.” He says with a strong international following, the BCorp certification is likely to attract visitors who actively seek to support BCorps during their travels in NZ.
The company’s commitment extends to their team through a culture-first approach and to the community via a formal and informative donation strategy. This approach reflects the core of a BCorp certification, which is about using business as a force for good.
He encourages fellow tourism operators to embark on the BCorp journey, and emphasises that while the certification process was rigorous, they are immensely proud of this achievement.
Not just an accomplishment professionally, Paul says, “Personally, I have become more conscientious as a consumer, actively supporting other BCorp businesses whenever possible.”
This certification is a nod to Rotorua Canopy Tours’ dedication to sustainable business practices and their commitment to the community and environment. It sets a new standard in the tourism industry, not just in Rotorua but across New Zealand.
