With the start of 2024, and our summer season showing solid promise, Air New Zealand’s chief customer and sales officer, Leanne Geraghty shares the travel predictions and trends for the travel landscape in 2024, that include short local getaways to international hotspots.
Embracing Short Breaks and Premium Travel
Air New Zealand predicts 2024 is set to witness a surge in short, two to three-day breaks, as travellers seek quick rest and reset options or adventure-filled weekends. These mini-vacations, conveniently located within close proximity, cater to the growing need for brief yet fulfilling escapes from daily routines.
In the realm of long-haul travel, premium experiences continue to be in high demand. Travelers are increasingly opting for luxury and comfort, making premium travel options a top trend for the year.
New Zealand’s Hotspots in 2024
Christchurch emerges as a thriving destination, continually evolving from its rebuild. The city offers an ever-expanding array of attractions, from its vibrant city center to nearby popular spots like Banks Peninsula and Hanmer Springs. The upcoming Te Kaha Stadium and Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre are set to add even more excitement to the city’s offerings.
Queenstown remains a favourite, drawing visitors with its year-round activities. Early booking is advised for this tourist hotspot, as flights tend to fill up quickly.
Regional New Zealand also shines, offering diverse experiences from vineyard explorations in Hawkes Bay to scenic Great Walks like the Abel Tasman. These regions present a plethora of choices for visitors seeking authentic New Zealand adventures.
International Travel Trends for 2024
Leanne says Australia continues to be the top offshore destination for Kiwis, with Air New Zealand flying to nine Australian cities. From the tropical north of Queensland to the bustling nightlife of Melbourne and Sydney. “There’s something for every traveller.” she says.
Queensland, particularly Cairns and the Sunshine Coast, is expected to remain a winter favourite, while Perth’s sun-kissed urban charm is highly recommended.
The Cook Islands, with its quality accommodation and year-round availability, is fast becoming a staple getaway for Kiwi families, singles, and couples, joining Fiji as a preferred island destination.
Looking farther afield, Bali and Japan are set to be the big international favourites in 2024. Japan, with its urban culture, continues to attract Kiwis, while Bali’s beach paradise, enhanced by favourable exchange rates, sees a doubling in seasonal service capacity, offering more opportunities for Kiwi travellers.
