Migrant Exploitation Protection Work Visa (MEPV)
In an effort to alleviate exploitation, INZ has revised the MEPV. This visa now includes comprehensive resources in 12 languages, offering crucial guidance on identifying and avoiding immigration scams. This initiative underscores New Zealand’s dedication to safeguarding the rights and well-being of migrant workers.
Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
The AEWV has undergone a significant overhaul. INZ is now implementing a more rigorous assessment process, requiring employers to provide detailed information to verify the legitimacy and currency of job vacancies. This move aims to ensure that employers are fully equipped to support their prospective hires. However, it’s important to note that these changes may lead to longer processing times for both Employer Accreditation and Job Check phases.
Changes to Trial Periods and Labour Hire Firms
A notable policy shift is the elimination of 90-day trial periods for AEWV hires, effective from October 29 2023. This applies even to Job Checks submitted before this date but assessed thereafter. Additionally, from November 27 2023, construction labour hire firms must ensure that at least 35% of their workforce comprises New Zealand citizens and residents, a step towards balancing local and migrant employment.
Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa (SMC)
The SMC has seen a simplification in its points system, setting a clear threshold for skills required for residence. The introduction of the List of Qualifications exempt from Assessment (LQEA) and a new interim visa for SMC applicants are significant strides towards streamlining the application process. Additionally, the new priority processing order, which favours applicants with six points without work experience, is a game-changer for many aspiring residents.
Flexibility for SMC Interim Visa Holders:
In a move to provide greater flexibility, SMC Interim Visa holders can now apply to vary the conditions of their visas. This change offers a much-needed breathing space for applicants navigating the complexities of the immigration process.
