Visa Wellington On a Plate going ‘beer-listic’ for burgers this August

The August edition of Visa Wellington On a Plate is set to kick off from August 11-27, and for the first time will be firmly focused on burgers and beers, with Burger Wellington presented by Garage Project set to take over the capital alongside Beervana on August 18-19.

The August programme will also include beer and burger-related events and pop-ups across the region.

Last August, more than 200,000 burger lovers visited more than 200 venues participating in Burger Wellington presented by Garage Project. Visa Wellington On a Plate’s annual celebration of the burger has seen a devoted local fandom develop over the years.

Visa Wellington On a Plate festival director Sarah Meikle says since the start of Burger Wellington in 2010, more than 1.52 million burgers have made their way into the hands and mouths of burger fans.

“Wellington is the craft beer capital of New Zealand and Wellingtonians are absolutely obsessed with burgers, so this year we are going all in for the August edition of the Festival, embracing the burger as well as amplifying the city’s craft beer offering around Beervana,” she says.

Last year Chaat Street was the winner of Burger Wellington presented by Garage Project 2022 with their vegetarian ‘Dabeli’ burger.

This week Chaat Street and Garage Project are launching the ‘All India Permit’ beer, a collaboration that is part of the prize package for taking out the top award for Burger Wellington.

All India Permit is a spiced hazy pale ale which is brewed with pilsner, wheat and crystal oats matched with tropical Mosaic hops, a subtle touch of anardana (pomegranate seed) amchoor (dried green mango) tamarind and Indian spices. This beer will be available at Chaat Street’s restaurants in Wellington and Auckland, as well as through all Garage Project venues and website.

Vaibhav Vishen of Chaat Street says taking out Wellington’s most hotly contested culinary competition and creating All India Permit has been a career highlight.

“It’s been incredible working with Pete Gillespie from Garage Project on this collaboration brew that has skillfully honoured the flavours of India and captures the character of Chaat Street.”

Pete Gillespie of Garage Project says it’s been both humbling and inspiring to work with Vaibhav on this beer.

“His passion and depth of knowledge has made the experience hugely rewarding.

“I’m stoked with the outcome of this collaboration. The result is a beer that truly compliments the incredible flavours of Chaat Street. Every one of the pairings of Vaibhav’s food and this beer I’ve tried has left me smiling.”

Visa Wellington On a Plate head of programming Beth Brash says the appetite for Burger Wellington is simply huge, and it’s been incredible to see the range of people taking part.

“Last year the Kelson Four Square entry caused a decent ripple in the Wellington ‘Burger-verse’, and we’re already seeing some fantastic entries come through that are sure to satiate fans alongside some solid events for an action-packed August.”

“As a proud partner of Visa Wellington on a Plate for 14 years, we can’t wait for the crowds to get a taste of the creative collaborations on offer around the capital,” says Visa’s country manager for New Zealand and South Pacific Anthony Watson.

“With the Visa NZ Hospitality Scholarship winner also set to be announced during August, this next edition of the festival is another exciting opportunity to showcase the best of the country’s culinary and hospitality talent.”

The full Visa Wellington On a Plate festival programme and Burger Wellington presented by Garage Project entries will be released at 10am on July 18.
