Mt Hutt opening day a ‘moving target’

Mt Hutt’s official opening day has become something of a ‘moving target’, with the weather not playing ball.

An announcement posted on the Mt Hutt Facebook page on Tuesday says the crew are “on board and raring to go”, but they’re still waiting for the snow to arrive.

“A cooler period of weather is forecast to arrive at the end of the week so we are hopeful mother nature delivers a much-anticipated jump start to our slopes,” Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said in the Facebook post.

“If that doesn’t happen, and weather conditions allow, then our snowmaking system – with eight new state-of-the-art fan guns added over the summer – is fully ready to crank into action!”

However, ski hopefuls would have been disappointed when a response in the comments section stated that the fields will not be open this coming weekend.

Hopeful skiiers will be waiting with baited breath to hear whether next weekend is a go, with the team saying they’ll be ‘revising early next week’.

Mt Hutt was voted New Zealand's Best Ski Resort for the sixth year in a row, and typically has some of the most consistent snowfall in the country delivering a long, white season.

There’s a lot booked for 2022, with the first event – a moonlit ski experience – initially booked for June 11.

Mt Hutt’s anticipated opening day slated for June 10, and an anticipated closing date of October 16.
