Queenstown and Wānaka airports show commitment to safety and security

This week Queenstown and Wānaka airports will join airports across New Zealand and Australia taking part in the annual Airport Safety Week, October 19-23, 2020.

The event is an initiative of the NZ Airports Association and the Australian Airports Association.

This is the fifth year Queenstown and Wānaka airports have taken part. A programme of events across both sites has been designed to engage with employees, contractors and businesses operating at the airports

“Safety is our number one priority and Safety Week provides us with an important opportunity to collaborate, share knowledge, refresh our skills and learn new things," says general manager, operations and safety Mike Clay.

"We have planned sessions aimed at getting people from across the airport community together and participating.  Our seventeen activities showcase what our various airport teams do day-to-day whilst providing further education and highlighting the importance of safety and security.

“This year we are also co-hosting some online interactive sessions with Dunedin and Invercargill airports as part of the Southern Airports Alliance.”

The Queenstown and Wānaka programme of events includes sessions with professionals from various aviation, emergency management and health and safety disciplines, some of which will also focus on COVID-19.

Interactive sessions to kickstart the event on Monday include a Foreign Object Debris walk at the Queenstown Airport main terminal apron to learn how to identify potential hazards as well as a sterile area awareness and treasure hunt session in the afternoon, to provide an insight into Aviation Security.

Other highlights will include the opportunity to see how Aviation Security’s Explosive Detector Dog Unit works, a collaborative breakfast BBQ, a fire safety presentation, an interactive automated external defibrillator workshop, a landside security activity and financial wellness workshops.
