Less than a year after Taupō won the Most Beautiful Large Town award, Otumuheke Hot Stream has been chosen as a finalist in the Beautiful Awards 2019.
The Otumuheke Hot Stream is a finalist in the Kiwi Choice Award and the toilet block at Otumuheke is a finalist in the Best Loo category.
Landscape architect Fraser Scott, who worked on the design of the Otumuheke facilities, says the nominations are great recognition for a project that brought together the key stakeholders and that has proven very popular with the community.
"Otumuheke has been a real partnership, with landowners the Patuiwi Maori Reserve Trust, T≈´wharetoa Maori Trust Board, Department of Conservation, Taupo District Council, Taupo Police and Waikato Regional Council all coming together to make it happen.
"Funding was provided from the Taupo District Council and the Regional Mid-Sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund, and Craters of the Moon Trust contributed to the new bridge, and the result has been outstanding. Being recognised by awards like this is fantastic, but the greatest reward is seeing how much the community has embraced it and the enjoyment they get out of it," he says.
The Beautiful Awards winners will be announced on Thursday, October 24.
